>>So can any member advise if there were any kind of directories for Nottingham
as early as this 1799?<<
There was a directory that covered Nottingham town published in 1783 - "Bailey's
Western and Midland Directory; or Merchants & Tradesman's useful Companion for
...Every Principal Town in Berkshire, Hampshire, Dorsetshire, Somersertshire,
Devonshire, Cornwall, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Oxfordshire, Derbyshire,
Cheshire, Staffordshire, Nottinghamshire, Warwickshire & Lancashire with the
Cities of London & Westminster".
>>and does anyone know anything about the 'Regulating Service' that's a new one
to me - would it be the military, or something to do with the Customs or
Taxation ?<<
A Regulating Officer was a Royal Naval Officer in charge of recruitment in a
seaport or town. The Regulating Service was the recruitment arm of the Royal
Navy - of which the Press was a part.
