Helge Ingstad
Norwegian Explorer
Helge Ingstad, 101, a Norwegian writer and adventurer who sought to prove
that the Vikings reached North America as much as 500 years before
Christopher Columbus, died March 29 in a hospital in Oslo. The cause of
death was not reported.
Mr. Ingstad practiced law before setting out on a life of adventure and
research. He worked as a fur hunter in Canada, and in 1931 published his
first book, "Pelsejegerliv," about his life among the Inuits.
He later served as a district governor in Greenland, which was briefly
claimed by Norway in the 1930's, and then as governor of the Svalbard
Islands, a Norwegian territory in the arctic. In 1968, he found traces of
a Viking settlement from about the year 1000 during excavations in
Newfoundland, Canada.
