Dear ISIDM members,
the WG is collecting references and links to existing works on
interface design and gesture controllers for musical applications, but
they are welcome all the works on interactive systems regarding dance,
video, installation and so on.
The community working on gesture interfaces is quite large, and I
believe it only partially overlaps with the research community of
computer music. Unfortunately, many interesting works are difficult to
find and to index because their authors are interested in "performing"
rather than "publishing" their results.
We ask the collaboration of you all for spreading the news on
interesting, appealing, and cool interfaces. Here's a call for
interfaces that you might let circulate also out of the working group.
CALL FOR INTERFACES
If you develop or use a gesture interface to perform music (or if you
know about some new interfaces), please spend a few minutes to
describe it. Descriptions and pointers will be available on the web
site of the Interactive Systems and Instrument Design in Music
(ISIDM):
http://www.notam.uio.no/icma/interactivesystems/wg.html
We believe that this can be a good starting point for exchanging
ideas, for sharing results and, most of all, for having gesture
interfaces more widely used by artists.
Descriptions should address these questions:
- Which are the gestures needed to control the interfaces?
(e.g., hands positions in space, full body movements, displacement of
sliders)
- Does the interface give any kind of feedback, apart from the sound
itself?
(e.g., displays, force feedback, kinesthetic feedback)
- How many independent parameters can be controlled, or, how many
degrees of freedom has the interface?
(i.e., limitations due to the technology and limitations due to the
possible human gestures)
- Which technology is used for capturing gestures?
(e.g., video capturing, accelerometers, switches)
- How long does it take to acquire a good control of the interface?
Once the first funciontalities are mastered, is it possible to explore
the interface?
(i.e., rough time required to start playing and/or to deeply control)
- Has the interface already been used in public performances?
Any link to web pages or publications is welcome.
Please send informations to Nicola Orio ([log in to unmask]).
