Beyond output-driven regeneration?
Wednesday 28th March 2001
The work that led to the Government's National Strategy for
Neighbourhood Renewal included root and branch analysis of problems in
regeneration practice to date. Issues identified included: inflexible
rules, failure to involve communities, and inflexible and unconnected
aims and methods of delivery. The Government says it will address
these problems - but meanwhile, how can we make existing initiatives
work more effectively? How can we learn lessons for best practice and
incorporate them in our work now - rather than waiting for the rules
to change?
In the run up to the establishment of Local Strategic Partnerships,
this seminar explores the lessons of regeneration to date and how to
develop new ways of working that build on our present experience of
what has worked..
Phil Boland discusses community involvement in the EU-funded Objective
One programme in Liverpool, including local concerns about making such
involvement a reality - and the ways these concerns have been
addressed.
Ben Jupp discusses how to create an environment that facilitates
partnership working, especially through building trust and a shared
commitment to the partnership's aims.
In two case studies examining cutting edge practice in developing
inclusive regeneration, Krishna Sarda reports on CEMVO's London
Capacity Building programme for enhancing the participation skills of
London's ethnic minority communities, while Gary Bowman describes on
Sandwell Council's pioneering attempts to involve its communities in
developing a vision and plan for the Borough.
