I find an actor network approach which analyses in
terms of network of actors, human and non human which
act on each other, i.e. make a difference, helpful in
avoiding getting tied up in knots about the boundaries
of the social / natural/ physical realms. ANT talks in
terms of difficult passages, entanglements and the
other actors (human or non human) that need to be
recruited in order to perform an action. A difficult
passage could be a step, or a sequence of actions that
require being able to read in order to be caried out.
The expectation that people can or should be able to
climb steps or read acts to make passages harder for
some and esier for others. With cognitive impairments
another set of actors built into the equation are the
assumptions that reasonable adult citizens come
equipped with the standard package of cognitve
competencies. ( Being able to read and write, remeber
things, read expressions etc. etc.)
