RGS/IBG
Reading Meeting 2001
Mon 26th -Wed 28th March 2001
St.John's College, Durham University
Thank you for expressing an interest in coming to the SCGRG
reading meeting. As promised here are further details.
The theme is on 'Beyond Representation' and we have been
working up a list of readings that engage with recent
developments within and beyond geography that have tried to
develop theories of practice and identity that respond to calls to
move beyond a discursive turn, to engage with material,
embodied, emotional life. On receipt of payment we shall supply
copies of the readings but below is an outline:
Session 1: Knowledge and Perception
Tim Ingold - Perception and the Environment
Bruno Latour - The Slight Surprise of Action
Session 2: Vital Matters
Simone Fullager - Desiring Nature
Stephen Muecke - Magic and Rivers of Blood
Alan Radley - Elusive Knowledge
Session 3: The Unfigured City
Michel de Certeau - Ghosts and Legends
Gil Doron - The Dead Zone
Session 4: Potentialities
Kirsten Simonsen - The Embodied City
Catherine Nash - Performativity in Practice
Sarah Whatmore - Animals and Hybridity
The event will be structured around one and half hour sessions,
where breakaway groups will discuss the papers for an hour
then we shall reassemble to pool responses and ideas. The event
will start at 6pm on the 26th with dinner, after which there will be
a preliminary open discussion session. The next day will have
three reading sessions, allowing time for a break to go into town
and relax, the evening will have (we hope) a speaker led session.
The final day we have a reading session looking at how debates
are being taken up in different ways in geography, then a
plenary. The event will end with lunch on the 28th.
The cost of attending the event is £65 including full board and
accommodation at St. John’s College. (Cheques made payable
to University of Durham). For non-residential delegates the fee
will be £18 - covering meals, meeting rooms and copying the
papers. If you would like to check out the venue their web site is
