PhD positions are available in
HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION
at the University of Glasgow, UK
The Department of Computing Science at the University of Glasgow is seeking
applications for postgraduate study from highly qualified and motivated
candidates. We are one of the best departments in the country, gaining one
of the coveted 5* awards in the last Research Assessment Exercise. We have
a very active programme of research which covers a broad range of topics
including: Information Retrieval, large and long-lived systems,
human-computer interaction, formal analysis, theory and algorithms and 3D
perception. We have EPSRC studentships and other funding available in all of
these areas for UK, European and overseas students.
Glasgow Interactive Systems Group (GIST)
GIST is an inter-disciplinary research group that focuses on adaptive
information access, information visualisation, mobile computing, highly
re-configurable user interface architectures, multimodal interaction,
psychology of interaction, formal analysis of human error and system failure
and techniques to mitigate the impact of human error in safety-critical
systems. For more information read the GIST web pages at
http://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk/gist/
This year we hope to attract three or four new research students
in the following general areas (but feel free to suggest your own!):
* Stephen Brewster http://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk/~stephen
Auditory interfaces, earcons and the use of 3D sound
to improve human-computer interfaces; Multimodal
interaction, haptic and force-feedback devices; Telephone-based
interfaces and the combination of speech and non-speech sounds;
Interfaces for blind and visually impaired people; Auditory
interfaces to mobile computing devices.
* Matthew Chalmers http://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk/~matthew
Human-computer interaction, information retrieval, data mining, 2D
and
3D information visualisation, computer supported collaborative work,
virtual environments. Adaptive interfaces and collaborative
filtering. The theory of information representation, and informatics'
relationship to architecture, semiology and philosophy.
* Phil Gray http://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk/~pdg
User-interface design tools, techniques and methodology; user
interface management systems, rapid prototyping; learnability and
usability in object-oriented programming languages; data
visualisation; information representation
* Chris Johnson http://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk/~johnson
Human error, safety-critical interfaces, accident and incident
reporting. Simulation and training. Warnings and alarms.
Development of ubiquitous and mobile computer systems for
pragmatic applications.
* Rod Murray-Smith http://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk/~rod
Pattern recognition and user-modelling in human-computer/machine
interaction, gesture recognition, force-feedback, inverse
simulation. Much
of this work is based on use of computationally-intensive statistical
models, and is applied in control system contexts such as the
aerospace or
automotive industries.
