3- Year Research Fellowship in Knowledge Management
We are seeking to employ a research fellow for a project funded by the
EPSRC within the DTIs Management of Information Programme. A major outcome
of the project will be the development of a hybrid knowledge base which
combines knowledge elicited from experts with knowledge inferred by
automated methods from data mining operations.
In this particular project we are concerned with developing a collection of
knowledge about countermeasures to staff theft which can be made available
to operational staff in a way that allows those staff (e.g. retail unit
managers) to use the knowledge to explore how their own operational
decisions can be informed by an understanding of the vulnerabilities to
staff theft in the particular context of their own work environments.
The research will use the concept of the repertory grid as a unifying
framework for combining expertise from individuals, with the knowledge
resulting from pattern discovery from data sources. There will be some work
concerned with the design of an interface to the hybrid knowledge base
which can be used by experts other than the originators of the grid, to
inspect and revise the contents in the light of their on-going experiences
e.g. of incidences of staff theft and deployments of countermeasures.
Our partners in the project include retailers with expertise in security
and staff theft couter measures and a provider of commercial tools for
data mining, machine learning, knowledge base construction.
The RF requires a sound background in Computer Science and good programming
skills. Applicants should also have post graduate qualifications or
experience in one or more of the following : user interface design,
knowledge representation, A.I. tools.
