I had a 5 year old boy with a minor v shaped scalp laceration to the crown
of his head a few days ago.
I had run out of staples and glue due to a run of minor injuries recently,
so explained to the parents that in children staples or glue were more
humane than suturing for such a minor laceration. So after checking with
the A+E nurse that they had both staples and glue in stock I sent them off
to the A+E (45 mins away).
The child returned today to have his 3 ethilon sutures removed, so I just
ended up looking lazy!
I haven't sutured a simple scalp laceration in a child for years. Has there
been a change in emphasis or was I just dealing with an inexperienced SHO?
