The Annual Lecture of LSE Health and Social Care will be delivered by
Professor Theodore Marmor, a Centennial Professor for 2001-2003, working
with LSE Health and Social Care. A Professor of Public Policy at Yale
University, Marmor heads Yale's postdoctoral program in Social Science and
Health Policy and is the author of Understanding Health Reform (Yale Press,
1999) among other books. His lecture topic is 'Fads and Fashions in Medical
Care: A Sceptic's View'. In his lecture Professor Marmor will question two
assumptions that regularly appear in discussions of what fundamental medical
policy choices should address. Firstly, the presumption that explicit
specification of the scope of publicly funded medical services is a crucial
and needed step in improving policy making in this arena. Secondly, he
questions the appropriateness of explicit rationing; that is, the belief
that being clear in public about who gets what (and who does not)
constitutes desirable public policy.
Professor Marmor also aims to address endorsements of widened visions of
health, attention to the social determinants of population health, and the
idea that health reform ideas are sweeping the world. All of these are in
some respect fads and the lecture will concentrate on their distorted form
rather than their idealised versions.
The lecture will be chaired by Professor Julian Le Grand, Richard Titmuss
Professor in Health Policy. A reception will follow the lecture.
