Dear Bonnie and Tom
Reference your searches last year for St. Thomas's Well,
Windleshaw.
I came across http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ some time ago, it allows one to search
and travel (in the mind's eye) along the old roads. The maps are dated between
1846 and 1899 and whilst travelling north eastwards from number 4 Eccleston,
Lancashire and Furness. I came to St Thomas's Well. It is located about 150
yards West North West of Windleshaw Chantry. This fits in with where I believed
it to be, in the middle of the municipal cemetery.
It is difficult to use the above URL unless one is familiar with the local
geography, however
a more direct route is via
http://www.old-maps.co.uk/oldSite/10lancs191/HTML/fs_19100001d.htm
on the Old Site and scroll across the top of the map from left to right to see
Windleshaw Chantry.
Another well can be observed below the Chantry this is not St. Thomas's Well.
Since I started this letter I have found out the co-ordinates for St. Thomas's
Well using the old-map
Enter 350000 in the Easting box and 396800 in the Northing box and proceed from
there and up pops the well. I could only work out the Northings and Eastings by
first using the post code of a known location, then when I found the matching
co-ordinates, varied the numbers bit by bit until I found the co-ordinates for
the desired location. It is one thing knowing grid references on a modern map
but I would like to know 350000 What? East of where? and 396800 What? north of
where?
Regards Mike
I believe this free government service could be of use in locating other old
wells
