INTERDISCIPLINARY CONFERENCE

EUROPE AND THE ASIA-PACIFIC:
CULTURE, IDENTITY AND REPRESENTATIONS OF REGION

The Centre for Research in European Studies (CREST) is holding its 4th annual conference in association with the UEA Asia-Pacific Group on Thursday and Friday, 10th and 11th May, 2001. The venue is the Elizabeth Fry building on the University of East Anglia campus in Norwich. The preliminary programme includes papers dealing with a significant range of issues including the ASEM process, security cultures and security communities, property rights, cultural reproduction, postcolonialism, interraciality, Islamic identity in Europe, media representations, the role of law in identity formation, issues in political economy, The broad comparative dimensions of the papers include perspectives ranging from regionalist constructions of 'European' identity to more specific studies of relational identity construction in countries as diverse as Japan, Sweden, Russia, Australia, France, Malaysia and New Zealand, Thailand, India, Britain, China, and Indonesia. The disciplines represented at the conference include art history, politics and international relations, law, economics, sociology, development studies, history, gender studies, literary studies and architecture and urban planning and paper presenters will be travelling from Australia, the US, India, Italy, China, Taiwan, Sweden, Japan, Hong Kong, and Germany. The conference will therefore be truly international and interdisciplinary while retaining a special focus on comparative inter-regional studies between Europe and the Asia-Pacific.

About UEA and Norwich

The University of East Anglia is situated on 320 acres of park and woodland on the edge of Norwich. One of the best-known buildings on campus is the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts which houses a significant collection. Norwich was founded in Saxon times and has a 1,000 year-old Cathedral and a castle of similar antiquity. Norwich also contains within its precincts more extant medieval churches than any other city in Europe. The city is situated close by the Norfolk Broads which are renowned for sailing and the presence of abundant wildlife.

Travelling to Norwich

Norwich is easily accessible by train and coach from London and there is a regular coach service which runs to and from the airports of Gatwick, Heathrow and Stansted. Norwich also has its own airport and there are direct flights available from Aberdeen, Edinburgh, and Manchester within the UK, and KLM operates direct flights from Amsterdam. If travelling by car, Norwich is best approached via the A11 from London. The A11 may also be picked up from the M25. If coming from the north, the simplest routes are the M6, the M1, or the A1, then the A14 (past Cambridge), and then the A11.

Conference Organization

The conference organiser is Professor Stephanie Lawson ([log in to unmask]) and the conference secretary is Dr Michael Drake ([log in to unmask]). All enquiries concerning registration should be directed to Dr Drake.

Accommodation

On-campus accommodation with breakfast is available for £32.00 per night for a single room in the Nelson Court Guest Suite. A limited number of double and twin rooms are also available. Book early to secure one of these! Student rates are also available. For detailed information on charges for various types of rooms see the booking form enclosed with this notice. Intending participants are asked to make their own arrangements with the accommodation office. Please see the attached accommodation booking form.

Registration

The standard registration fee for the full two days is £40.00 (£20.00 for one day). Registration for students is £20.00 for two days (£10.00 for one day). Registration includes morning and afternoon tea and coffee but no meals.

Pre-registration

A discounted registration fee is available for those who pre-register with payment by 1 April 2001: £35.00 (and £17.50 for one day) and £15.00 (and £7.50 for one day) for students. A pre-registration form is attached.

Lunches

In order to keep registration costs down, no formal arrangements have been made for lunch on either day. Conference participants will find a range of cafeteria-style food outlets on campus. The Sainsbury Centre, which is only a few minutes walk away, has two food outlets.

Conference Dinner

This will be held on campus on the evening of Thursday 10th May and will be £30.00 in addition to the registration fee. If you wish to be included, you must register by 1 May because numbers will need to be confirmed with the caterers in advance.

Programme

Those who pre-register will receive a formal programme approximately ten days before the conference. Programmes will otherwise be available on the day.

Venue and Conference Registration Desk

The venue is the Elizabeth Fry building (see campus map). The conference registration desk will be open in the foyer from 9am on Thursday 10th May and will remain open until after lunch. It will also be open from 9.00-9.30 am on Friday 11th May. Coffee will be available at the registration desk on the first day.
