The Protection of the title of Physiotheraist and Physical Therapist has
been a long standing campaign by the CSP over at least the last 7 years
since I have been involve with CSP Branch work. The Grandfather Clause
whereby non-qualified people have so long to provide evidnece that they are
good enough so to speak to call themselves or get qualified has been a
stumbling block I believe. I also believe it will be going through
Parliament along side the CPSM Act providing there is enough time in the
present Government sitting for it to get through - so it all coould hinge on
the date of the election. The CPSM Act I believe also address the necessity
of continuing education and people keeping up to date with their skills. I
think this is as big an issue as allowing unqualified practitioners to
practice. It is a difficult thing to police as well - people can easily go
on coourses and pick up certificates to show they have been but how much
knowledge/skills do they pick up/retain/use? In both the NHS and private
practice there are many people who I believe are either inappropriately
treating patients with either unproven methods (I know there is not a lot of
hard evidence out there for alot of what we do!)or for an awful long time.
This "overtreating" risks medicalising people rather than helping them cope
with their problems and in the private sector costs the patient an awful lot
of money!
Controversial thoughts - but shoouldn't we be addressing our own house as
well as protecting oour title?
