I also use the Berg scale. I find it is useful only for a certain
"window" of patients, as it is not very sensitive at low levels of function
and has a "ceiling effect." Others you can use:
1. Tinetti Performance Oriented Mobility Assessment - good at predicting
fallers vs. non-fallers but scoring is subjective and the test is not very
sensitive to changes over time.
2. Functional Reach - Also determines fall risk, but is incorporated into
the Berg
3. Timed Up and Go - Easy to perform and also determines fallers vs.
non-fallers, moderately correlated with Berg balance scores
SLS, Romberg, and sharpened Romberg are also included in the Berg, but
keeping track of time scores may help track progress.
