On the same lines are list members aware of the marketing ploy of the
"Obstetric TNS". I have recently bought one such product for my wife to use
during her forthcoming childbearing and was most unimpressed. The Obstetric
model boasted a power surge button which when pressed allegedly increases the
analgesic effect for use during contractions. On closer inspection what this
magic button does is switch the TNS operating mode between burst and
continuous mode. (There is a claim of a "graded 10% increase in power over 3
seconds" as the machine switches between burst to continuous but I could not
discern this during a test of the unit.) The same company produces a
standard tens, without the button but with a continuous/burst mode switch on
a recessed panel. Now I can see the benefit a big red button has over a
small white switch when a woman is in labour, but can anyone justify a
surcharge of over $40! for this feature. Good marketing, questionable ethics.
