In Gloucestershire we recently edited all of our canals, railways and
tramways so that individual lines/canals are recorded as one SMR number with
all the sites associated with them (bridges, locks, lock-keepers cottages
etc) as sub numbers. They are then all mapped on seperate GIS layers and on
one combined 'linear' layer. It is sometimes quite problematic working out
what belongs with what (e.g. was the bridge built by/for the railway) but it
does mean that all the records for the road/canal/railway are kept together.
Hope this helps. If you would like some sample records GIS plots let me know
and I'll email them to you

Subject: Roads, canals, etc and another question
While sorting through and rearranging West Berkshire's SMR, the
question of what to do with records of roads, canals, etc has arisen.
At present, for example, Ermine Way has been entered in groups of old
SMR numbers (parent-child links) at various spots, and under different
location names. Using exegesis we can filter out all roads, roman and
within certain parishes - but would it be better to give one route the
same number (or just use its name?). We are also wondering whether
it's more useful for associated paper records to be kept together or to
be put within geographical areas (our preference for other sites).
Duplication may be the answer?
On a second point, how do exegesis users enter find spots from field
walking - ie if several different period finds come from exactly the
same area, is this one multi-period site or several monuments on top of
each other? We currently have both approaches. My preference
would be for the former if only to avoid cluttering up the maps.
