THE POTENTIAL OF VIDEO AND LEADING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY
TO ENHANCE LANGUAGE LEARNING
A CILT residential course at the University of Brighton, 5pm
Wednesday 21 to lunchtime Friday 23 February 2001
This course is designed for those with an interest in the application
of educational technology and ICT to the MFL classroom.
Focus
The course will focus on:
*the exploitation and production of video materials;
*critical reflections on the potential of network communication,
including Web-based resources, video-conferencing and e-mail.
Aim
The overall aim is to provide a course that will blend theory with
practice. This course will inform participants on the possibilities
afforded now and in the near future by technology, and it will offer
practical ideas and opportunities to develop these ideas in hands-on
experience sessions.
Sessions
There will be talks and demonstrations to provide concrete
suggestions on activities to develop listening, speaking and writing
skills and opportunities to reflect on what is offered by authentic
television broadcasts, multimedia systems, video-conferencing, e-
mail and the resources of the World Wide Web.
There will also be group workshops where ideas can be exchanged
and materials developed for use in the classroom. At the end of the
course participants have the option of remaining on-site to make
further use of the workshop.
Contributors
The course director is Professor Brian Hill of the University of
Brighton, who will be supported by experienced staff from the
School of Languages at the University. All of them have been
involved in the production and exploitation of materials for many
years and have practical experience in using video materials, video-
conferencing and Web resources.
Accommodation
Accommodation will be at the White Hart Hotel in Lewes, Brighton.
All rooms are single, have en suite facilities and televisions and you
will also have free use of the leisure facilities which include a
swimming pool. Meals include full English breakfasts served at the
hotel, lunch at the University, and evening meals (three course
carvery) at the hotel. There is plenty of parking space at the hotel
and transport to the University will be provided.
