RESEARCH STUDENTSHIP in GERMAN
Applications are invited for a three-year PhD studentship in German.
Applicants should already have, or expect to graduate with, a good second
class or a first class Honours Degree in German. The Studentship includes
payment of UK/EU tuition fees and postgraduate maintenance grant (currently
=A36,800 per annum).
Research proposals in any area of German literature, or in the areas of
German linguistics, cultural history, translation studies or
interdisciplinary research involving German will be considered. Preference
may be given to proposals in the nineteenth or twentieth centuries, but the
primary criterion will be the quality of the proposal.

The School of Modern Languages at St Andrews incorporates departments of
German, French, Spanish, Italian and Russian and has a highly developed
research culture with ample opportunity for participation in research
seminars, including those of the recently established Institute of European
Cultural Identity Studies. It is the home of the scholarly journal Forum
for Modern Language Studies. The library resources for German are strong,
with a particularly good holdings of Austrian literature. The University of
St Andrews affords a high quality, friendly study environment with ready
access to staff and to research facilities. The National Library of
Scotland in Edinburgh, and the Goethe Institute in Glasgow are additional
valuable and readily accessible research resources. St Andrews, a historic
town in a setting of outstanding natural beauty, offers a varied programme
