On March 5 and 6 there will a small meeting on ``Weather Risk in
Industry'' at the Royal Society, 6 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1.
The meeting will bring together representatives from industries exposed to
weather risk both with meteorologists from the U.K. Meteorological Office
and the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting and with
academics in mathematics, statistics, and prediction. Speakers from
sectors including energy, risk management and retailing will outline
weather risks problems that their businesses face. Academics and
meteorologists will discuss how data and forecasts might be used to tackle
industrial problems. Methods for strengthening academic-industrial links
in this area, particularly through the Smith Institute's Faraday
Partnership, is the primary goal of the meeting.
