AREA STUDIES PROGRAM OFFICER
EDUCATION, MEDIA, ARTS AND CULTURE PROGRAM
EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE AND RELIGION UNIT
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION: Working with the Director of the Education, Knowledge
and Religion unit and other Foundation staff, the program officer will
support the strengthening and revitalization of area studies, a field of
long-standing Foundation commitment. The program officer will be
responsible for: developing and implementing a Foundation strategy to
promote the sustainability of area studies programs by informing relevant
campus-based and government policy; and fostering innovative thinking with
respect to area studies. The program officer will be expected to join with
other Foundation staff in supporting projects that build new knowledge on
areas of the world of interest to the Foundation and that prepare students
to be global citizens.
The Program Officer will be expected to help build and implement a vision
for the future sustainability of the field as well as develop grantmaking
strategies; identify prospective grantees; solicit, review and respond to
grant proposals; and prepare recommendations for Foundation funding. In
addition to working with Foundation staff in New York and overseas offices,
the Program Officer will meet with other donors, government agencies, and
other professionals on issues of common program concern.
QUALIFICATIONS: Substantive professional experience in the field of area
studies (Ph.D. preferred); extensive work in academic institutions;
excellent interpersonal skills; sound analytical and writing abilities; a
teamwork orientation and ability to interact effectively with colleagues
from diverse disciplines and perspectives; strong conceptual,
organizational, financial analysis, and oral and written communication
skills.
