University of California, Berkeley, USA
Nigel Hall Manchester Metropolitan University, UK, Jackie Marsh University

The Journal of Early Childhood Literacy is a new peer-reviewed research
journal to be launched in April 2001. The journal will serve as a research
publication forum for studies within the field of early childhood literacy,
publishing relevant contributions in English from researchers in all
countries and in all disciplines.
Contributions are welcome from researchers working in the following areas:
·anthropology ·education ·language and linguistics ·psychology ·sociology
·historical and cultural studies
The main emphasis in the journal is on papers researching issues related to
the nature, function and use of literacy in early childhood. This includes
the history, development, use, learning and teaching of literacy, as well as
policy and strategy. Research papers may address theoretical,
methodological, strategic or applied aspects of early childhood literacy and
could be reviews of research issues. Contributions from all research
traditions are welcome, although emphasis will be placed on qualitative
studies. "Childhood literacy" implies an interest in papers which explore
childhood literacy beyond education, a distinctive orientation. Literacy is
broadly defined and papers will concentrate on the 0-8 age range.
It is a particular aim of the journal's editors that all contributions will
be written in clear English that allows access for people who are not
researchers. Papers published in the journal will:
·Report on research findings in early childhood literacy
·Contribute to the understanding of literacy in a variety of socio-cultural
contexts
·Explore conceptual and methodological issues in the study of early
childhood literacy
·Include the work of researchers from a wide range of academic disciplines
The Journal of Early Childhood Literacy is both a forum for debate about the
topic of early childhood literacy and a resource for those working in the
field. The journal welcomes letters for publication, notices of major
conferences, books for review, and announcements of research projects.
