As a consequence of a local situation here at Northumbria which is looking
like resulting in around 9% of staff positions being made redundant in the
near future (with a mere whimper of protest by and large) I was wondering if
colleagues elsewhere had experience of non-strike/unionised activities and
strategies that help make the academic life more bearable - I'm thinking of
ways in which geographers or others have been involved in practically
countering oppressive working and learning environments, such as in relation
to Health and Safety requirments, accessibility issues, contractual issues
and so on. Are there cunning and pesky ways that people have been utilise
in order to make University Management lives more unsettling, uncomfortable
and challenging, whilst also attempting to redress local power balances in
favour of the serfs and plebs who do the teaching and research? Replies are
welcome to me personally, or the list as a whole.
