Next question for the listmembers - this time for Nottingham area
this letter was dated 27 September 1799 written by Elizabeth Evans,
posted in Ollerton Cheshire to Mr Forbes in Holborn London
"Sir I have the pleasure to inform you that I received the thirty pounds
Note for the use of governor Milnes.
Major Boothby and family is gone to live in the town of Nottingham but I do
not know the name of the street he lives in. You will easily find him, he
is some thing in the Regulating Service"
So can any member advise if there were any kind of directories for
Nottingham as early as this 1799? and does anyone know anything about
the 'Regulating Service' that's a new one to me - would it be the
military, or something to do with the Customs or Taxation ?
The reference to Governor Milnes I would think would have to be Cheshire
not Nottingham. - but who or what that gentleman would have been is
anyone's guess - these old letters are quite fascinating.
As before, any information gratefully received.
