At the recent Disability with Attitude conference in Sydney there were
informal conversations about the possibility of establishing some kind of
archive around Australian disability activism. It was noted that Disability
Social History in the aussie context was underdeveloped. Surely those of us
who who were (and still are) activistsof the 1970's and 1980's still have
memorabilia floating around our cupboards, in boxes etc. Such an archive
would allow any individuals undertaking historical research in the future to
have access to materials. It was also noted that many younger activists had
little knowledge of the history that went before them. I am not sure where
to start with this suggestion - except to put the idea in the table. Maybe
interested people could set up an email working party.
Another related suggestion:
'Disability Hall of Fame': There are many activists with disabilities who
are no longer with us. These men and women fought the good fight and
struggled under difficult conditions. Their struggles shaped future
activism. Yet we often know the names and stories of US and UK activists
whilst knowing little of our Australian forebears. There has been a
suggestion to put up a web page memorial. Is there any interest in this
idea?
