Teaching Development in Geography

Session Proposal
This session aims to disseminate innovative good practice in higher education geographic teaching about the developing world and explore some of the dilemmas and difficulties such teaching raises. We hope the session will explore various questions: Can we represent the poorer countries of the world in ways that avoid the worst excesses of Orientalism and Othering? How do we meet our moral responsibilities to distant others via critical teaching praxis? In what ways is it possible to teach students to think about, critically engage with and move beyond stereotyping the so-called 'Third world' and its peoples? To what extent are environmental issues portrayed in deterministic terms or judged by 'western' technocentric standards?
Papers are welcome on all aspects of undergraduate and postgraduate level teaching of development and the developing world. In particular, papers are invited that explore issues around identity and prior knowledge affecting course delivery (including distance learning) to both home and overseas students. Papers are envisaged on issues such as textbooks, fieldcourses to developing countries, using film, literature and cartography to teach about distant others.
Papers from this session will be considered for publication as a collection on teaching development geography in the Journal of Geography in Higher Education (subject to usual review procedures).

Call for Papers
Titles and abstracts (max. 250 words) should be submitted to the session convenors by 30th April 2001. Decisions on the final papers will be made by mid-May. Those interested in presenting a paper are welcome to discuss their proposals with the session convenors before submitting an abstract.
