Dear Spenserians,
I am organizing this year's Spenser Roundtable at the Sixteenth Century
Studies Conference (Denver, CO, October 25-28, 2001). The Spenser Roundtable
is an annual gathering of Spenser scholars who present short papers on a
chosen topic and then engage in a dialogue with participants and with audience
members on the state of scholarship surrounding the topic under consideration.
As those of you who have attended previous Roundtables know, it is a
wonderful opportunity for participants to discuss their work in particular and
to reflect upon current trends in Spenser criticism in general.
The topic of this year's Roundtable will be "Spenser
and Sex," a theme that can encompass studies not only of sex and sexuality in
Spenser's works but also topics relating to gender, gender roles, the
rhetorical creation of desire, voyeurism, chastity, procreation, and so forth.
Ken Borris and Roger Kuin have already agreed to take part; we are now
looking for two more panel members to join us.
Papers for the Roundtable must be 8-10 minutes long in order to allow
time for discussion at the end of the presentations. Please send a short
abstract to me, Scott Lucas, by March 3, 2001, at one of the addresses below.
