January issue of Yorkshire Life has an article on Guiseley, giving
prominence to Harry Ranmsden's as you would expect. However
the final five paragraphs read:
Gislic and his merry bunch of marauders were probably
drawn to the area because of the abundent supply of fresh water
provided by the spring, which went on to supply the town's wells for
many centuries.
Theses same wells,at te corner of Springfield Road and
Butts Lane, are now in the process of being restored, thanks in part
to a grant from the Millenium Awards Scheme of £4,900.
Volunteers have already removed a small mountain of
sand, earth and algae from the wells and have dug down to the
original paving stones around the base. The next step will be to
extend the paved area and to point and repair the surrounding
walls.
In the meantime however the water, which comes from the
springs high up on the moors above the town, can clearly be seen
flowing through the wells at an estimated rate of 60 million gallons
a year.
If only Gislic had been as forward-looking as Harry, perhaps
Guisleley would now be as famous for its bottled spring water as it
is for its fish and chips.
Best wishes for the New Year to all,John
