OVERVIEW
Bridging the gap between the acceptance of online learning as a

2. What can we learn from history? A review of approaches -
    successes and failures.
3. Barriers which hinder development in individual institutions.
4. Involving the staff - an online learning development fellowship
    scheme.
5. Implementing in your institution?
6. ICT policy, student registration, integrated records, delivery
    platforms.
7. Sustaining and developing the change.

academic staff and enables them to acquire the skills,
knowledge and motivation to work confidently with online learning.
* relate the ideas to their own institutional context.
* participate in a pre- and post-conference online workshop.

A short paper describing the fellowship scheme, and documents
such as selection criteria, development programmes, supporting
programmes, and monitoring and evaluation schemes, will be
provided for participants.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS
Rachel Forsyth and Robert Ready work in the newly established
Learning and Teaching Unit at Manchester Metropolitan University.

John McCartney recently retired from his role as Head of
Educational Services at MMU. He is now an education consultant.

All three members of the workshop team are experienced higher
education teachers and have extensive experience in distance
education, online learning and multimedia development. The team
devised and delivered an institution-wide, online learning fellowship
scheme. Over 5,000 MMU students now study modules based
