OVERVIEW
Bridging the gap between the acceptance of online learning as a
good idea and its implementation is often difficult to achieve.
This workshop, based on a case study of a fellowship scheme
which has been running at MMU for the past three years, will
explore how staff can be enabled to make the transition from the
more traditional approaches, to those which exploit the best of
online delivery.
TOPICS TO BE COVERED
1. Strategic imperatives - institutional aspirations.
2. What can we learn from history? A review of approaches -
successes and failures.
3. Barriers which hinder development in individual institutions.
4. Involving the staff - an online learning development fellowship
scheme.
5. Implementing in your institution?
6. ICT policy, student registration, integrated records, delivery
platforms.
7. Sustaining and developing the change.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This workshop is aimed at institutional and departmental learning
and teaching co-ordinators, strategists and innovators, as well as all
staff involved in developing and supporting distance and online
learning.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES
Participants will:
* gain knowledge of a flexible strategic scheme, which engages
academic staff and enables them to acquire the skills,
knowledge and motivation to work confidently with online learning.
* relate the ideas to their own institutional context.
* participate in a pre- and post-conference online workshop.
A short paper describing the fellowship scheme, and documents
such as selection criteria, development programmes, supporting
programmes, and monitoring and evaluation schemes, will be
provided for participants.
ABOUT THE PRESENTERS
Rachel Forsyth and Robert Ready work in the newly established
Learning and Teaching Unit at Manchester Metropolitan University.
John McCartney recently retired from his role as Head of
Educational Services at MMU. He is now an education consultant.
All three members of the workshop team are experienced higher
education teachers and have extensive experience in distance
education, online learning and multimedia development. The team
devised and delivered an institution-wide, online learning fellowship
scheme. Over 5,000 MMU students now study modules based
around online delivery.
