I am currently working on a DETR commissioned research
project entitled 'The Co-ordination of Area-based
initiatives'. We are researching 9 initiatives including
Employment Zones, New Deal for Communities, Health Action
Zones, Sure Start, Crime Reduction Programme. It is a two
year project which aims to:
*identify and map the interaction of initiatves and the
barriers to co-ordination;
*examine the reasons for the barriers to co-ordination, to
estimate the costs and benefits associated with joint
working, to assess the scope for better working, and to
establish whether 'what works' is transferable elsewhere;
*develop a framework for the evaluation of the long term
effectiveness of co-ordinated working;
*draw out policy messages and offer policy advice and
facilitation, both locally and nationally, to help the
better co-ordination in local areas.
Case study areas - Sandwell, Plymouth, West Cumbria,
Newcastle, East London, South Yorkshire.
Two working papers are available from the DETR and a
Research Summary can be found on the DETR's regeneration
website: http://www.regeneration.detr.gov.uk/rs/
No. 35, 2000 'Collaboration and Co-ordination in
Area-based initatives.'
Final reports are due in 6 months time.
