RESEARCH FELLOW ESRC PROJECT ON THE OTHER AUSCHWITZ
We invite applications for a Research Fellow in the Geography and
Environmental Management Research Unit (salary up to £18,175). Fixed Term Contract 01.06.01 to 30.05.02.
We require candidates with a PhD in geography or a cognate discipline or
equivalent research experience, with a specialism in Eastern and Central
Europe to work on an ESRC funded project 'The Other Auschwitz: Economic change and the dead hand of history in Poland'. This project aims to explore the experiences of socialism and post-socialism in the town of Oswiecim, a place that happens also to be the home of the most famous Holocaust site in the world, Auschwitz. It investigates alternative histories of the town and analyses the conflicts present in debates over the town's development, paying particular attention to the roles of Auschwitz Museum and the town's chemical plant.
The project is the product of a collaboration between Andrew Charlesworth,
(Cheltenham & Gloucester College of Higher Education), Alison Stenning
(University of Birmingham) and Michal Paszkowski, (Jagiellonian University,
Krakow) and will be an opportunity for the post holder to work with an
international research team.
The main duties are to conduct extensive archival work and interviews with
key players in Oswiecim the Malopolska voivodship under the direction of the Principal Investigators; undertake extensive literature reviews and prepare report writing to publication standard.
The project requires a person who is bi-lingual in Polish and English;
knowledge of socialist and post-socialist Eastern and Central Europe;
questionnaire surveying and interviewing; good interpersonal and
self-management skills. The posts will provide excellent experience of
international and inter-disciplinary research, and offer opportunities for
publication. Candidates must have a high degree of motivation, an ability
for independent work, and an enthusiasm for travel.
