I've ventured out of my range an into literary themes in monastic
spirituality. I have a text in which the theme of exile is quite
prominent, and it seemed to me an obvious theme of monastic culture
generally -- exile from God on earth, and exile in the body, and exile
into the cloister. Am I right about this? Does exile figure as a theme
and a metaphor in monastic spirituality of, say the tenth through twelfth
century? Has anyone come across any primary or secondary literature which
they could point me to? Is there a standard work?
-thank, as always, for the generosity and guidance so often offered on
this list-
