Further to my last message, about the Design History Society conference,
to be held at the V&A / RCA on 20-22 Sept. this year, I can add a
detailed call for papers for the following session:
Representing the World of Goods: Attitudes to Consumption in the
Renaissance
Theories of consumption developed to explain issues of modernity are now
being applied to much earlier periods. This session will explore both
the methodological issues and opportunities implied by this shift as
well as looking at case studies in the practicalities of Renaissance
consumption. Papers are welcomed on either aspect, particularly those
that focus on the spaces, physical and social, for the acquisition of
goods, attitudes and anxieties about consumption and issues of designing
objects for a nascent consumer economy.
