The purpose of the colloquium is to explore the extent to which recent
written, film, media and pictorial textual representations reflect changes
over the last half-century in the legal appreciation of sexual equality, in
the involvement of women in the public sphere, in the definition of gender
roles in private relationships and the family, and in the self-disclosure of
sexual minorities.
Topics identified for discussion include images of gender roles in utopian
and dystopian narrative; the re-definition of erotic relations and power
relations between the sexes; the relevance of a writer's sex to the analysis
of sexual/trextual representation; contemporary developments in generic form
and style around these issues.
Texts discussed should be in one of the Romance languages, although
comparative approaches are welcomed.
A selection of papers given at the colloquium and other articles on related
topics will appear in two issues of the UWS-based journal Romance Studies to
appear in 2002; publication may be in English, French, Italian, or Spanish.
