Press Release
International Federation of Social Workers
XV. European Seminar 2001
"Managing Conflicts in Social Work - Dealing with Contradictions" is the
main subject of the European Seminar of Social Work to be held from 27 - 30
August, 2001 in Vienna and Bratislava. Separated by a mere 66 kilometres,
these countries were part of a historical world empire as well as
representatives of two ideological worlds, divided by an almost
insurmountable border. Today their bond, as symbolized by the Danube River
running through both cities, has prevailed over the past in creating renewed
friendly relations between neighbouring countries.
The main subject of the Conference is highlighted by the new definition of
social work as adopted by the IFSW General Meeting in Montreal, Canada, July
2000:
The social work profession promotes social change, problem solving in human
relationships and the empowerment and liberation of people to enhance
well-being. Utilising theories of human behaviour and social systems, social
work intervenes at the points where people interact with their environments.
Principles of human rights and social justice are fundamental to social
work.
Professional social work in its various forms addresses the multiple,
complex transactions between people and their environments. Professional
social work is focussed on problem solving and change. Dealing with
conflicts, differences and contradictions has always been characteristic of
social work, the main conflict being the individual participating in social
and economic life versus various kinds of social ostracism.
The Seminar addresses these conflicts, with issues ranging from the
microcosm of individual case work to the macrocosm of political and economic
systems.
The main theme of the Seminar calls for new approaches in theory as well as
learning from successes in practice. Excursions to social services in four
different countries - Slovakia, Austria, Hungary and the Czech Republic -
form an integral part of the program, thus providing an opportunity for
studies based on practical experience.
Additionally, this European Seminar organized by the professional
associations of Slovakia (ASPS) and Austria (ASPS) will become a forum for
the exchange of ideas and studying successful models for all participants.
As in Helsinki 1999, the European Seminar 2001 held in Vienna and Bratislava
will be complemented by a Congress for Students of Social Work.
