I am carrying out an evaluation of a ‘day service’ for people with physical
or sensory disability which is run by a voluntary organisation, is user-led
and based on the social model. (TheVol Org took over the running of a
long-standing LA Day Centre two years ago and the service moved into
different premises more recently)
Most of the literature that I’ve found relates specifically to services for
people with learning disability - and while there is much in there that is
useful. However I would be interested to hear of the experiences of other
projects which have challenged the traditional day centre model of service
in the area of physical and sensory disability - and particularly of
those where evaluation reports have been produced.
So far it seems to me that the key issues (in addition to resource
limitations and some specific ones about building, location and unfriendly
neighbours) are around:
i) Terminology and differing understandings of the meanings of
titles, functions and objectives e.g. service - facility -
resource - development - progression
ii) Access - limited to referall by SSD - effect on ‘user-led’
ethos - compromises...
iii) Assessment, care planning, review - liaison and partnership
with LA SSDs
iv) Review and monitoring of the ‘service’ - liaison and partnership
v) Constraints on achieving progression - moving on to other
activities/work - for members (users) (a paradox - the more
successful, enjoyable and well regarded the provision the less likely it
seems that many users/members will want to leave it!) - finding ways to
facilitate progression without ‘withdrawing’ a service
and transport transport transport……..
I would appreciate it if list members with an interest in this topic would
a) let me know of any projects which have addressed these issues
b) let me know of any research/evaluations addressing them
c) let me have any comments on any of these areas
Thank you!
