Detailed info about Kakworms can be found at Symantec site:
http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/wscript.kakworm.htm
They are quite well known, can close down Windows, often going critical on
the 1st of the month.
Symantec offer a tool for repairing kakworm damage, without necessarily
calling in the 12-year-olds. There is also info on where to get the MS
patch for the Outlook Express hole.
Norton antivirus software has quite adequately detected and disposed of
kakworms sent to me on four occasions in the past 3 weeks from Pakistan and
Tanzania, jumping on them as soon as I tried to open the ordinary e-message
(not attachment) they were riding on.
It helps if (1). you have activated the software. It is not enough to
have it installed, with the box of icons appearing – you have to check
through the icons, and click the appropriate one to ‘active’. Then you get a
mini icon in your screen bottom line, assuring you that it’s on the job.
Not activated – not protected. (2). you update regularly, as the worm
industry stays in business by bringing out new products with fresh wriggles.
When your initial software ‘free’ period expires, you can update for a
modest sum. Pay around 4 dollars per year, and you can update as often as
you like from the internet site indicated on the Norton icons. Norton
recommend once a month.
This is not an plug for or against Norton / Symantec – probably all the
major virus protectors work in somewhat similar ways. Nor does the above
claim to be ‘expert advice’ - it’s merely recent experience.
If Norton sues this list over statements in the earlier post, Mark can maybe
point to this as a ‘patch’ !
Work up a bad attitude, and disable your worms today.
