Research Associate/Assistant in the Department of Geography, University
of Bristol.
Starting salary: Research Staff Grade, point 6 (£18,731) and subject to
annual increments
Applications are invited for the post of research associate, tenable
for two and half years, to work on a project, Building institutions in
a vacuum? Devolution and England's South East (see attached description
of the project), which is part of the ESRC research programme,
Devolution and Constitutional Change, launched in 2000.
The project team is composed of Professor Adam Tickell, Professor of
Geography University of Bristol, author of numerous papers both on
governance, regulation theory and the political-economic geography of
the UK and on the political geography of finance. Adam is the
principal grant holder and is responsible for the day to day running of
the project. The other project team member is Dr Peter John, Reader in
Politics at Birkbeck College, London who has published in the field of
urban politics and is author of Analysing Public Policy (1998). The
project is based at the University of Bristol.
The main aim of the project - the investigation of the 'problem' of the
south-east region for the devolution experiment - requires the mapping
of its complex political and economic geography. Thus the first task
of the research assistant is to help carry out the fact and data
gathering aspects of the project as well as assist the analysis of the
data and the writing up the project in its later stages
The post-holder will:
- carry out background desk and archival research
- collect data on membership of key partnership bodies and prepare the
data for analysis
- attend key interviews (along with Peter John or Adam Tickell)
- conduct industry practitioner interviews
- develop preliminary analysis of interviews
- draft research papers and the research monograph (along with Peter
John and Adam Tickell
The project has access to extensive travel funds for which to carry out
the field research. The University of Bristol and members of the
project team will train the successful applicant in data collection and
management tasks should they be needed. The research assistant will
share an office with cognate post-doctoral researchers in the
Department of Geography and have their own computer and use of the
university's internet facilities.
The post would suit someone with a background in geography, politics or
another relevant social science. Some experience of managing and
carrying out fieldwork, such as for a doctoral thesis, is highly
desirable. The candidate should also have skills at carrying out
interviews, be comfortable with dealing with senior bureaucrats and
politicians and be able to efficiently record and summarise interview
material. The post holder should be capable of working independently
at times and also be able to collaborate on joint writing projects.
The project is mainly qualitative, but familiarity with the use and
management of quantitative data is a desirable but not essential
quality in the post holder.
Starting salary: Research Staff Grade, point 6 (£18,731) and subject to
annual increments
This is full time post but applications from potential job-sharers are
welcome.
We anticipate holding interviews during the week beginning 5 March 2001
