CULTURAL GEOGRAPHY INSTRUCTOR
for the
Pennsylvania Governor's School for International Studies
The Pennsylvania Governor's School for International Studies (PGSIS) is a
5-week residential program held at the University of Pittsburgh for talented
high school students interested in studying global issues and international
affairs. The PGSIS faculty is drawn from scholars at the University of
Pittsburgh and other colleges/universities, experienced high school teachers
and community leaders. All PGSIS courses are designed to address current
global problems and issues and should cover undergraduate level information,
theories and viewpoints within the area of study. Teaching methods are
student centered, inquiry based, and interactive.
The School is now accepting applications for a Cultural Geography
Instructor. This course should be designed to improve students' geographic
literacy through discussions about how humans and the environment interact
during a time of increased geographic change and globalization. Topics
(population, resource use vs. distribution, climate change, "development"
and modernization, as example) should be presented through a variety of
lenses - social, political, historical, economic, etc. - in order to
increase students' basic geographic knowledge and their understanding of
culture, ecology, and current world events and predicaments. A familiarity
with GIS is an asset.
QUALIFICATIONS (the ideal candidate would):
* Be an experienced scholar/practitioner in a field associated with
Cultural Geography
* Have an advanced degree in Environmental Studies (several other
areas related to Cultural Geography may also be appropriate, ABD or Ph.D.
preferred)
* Have experience working internationally
* Have at least 3 years of teaching experience at the college or high
school level
REQUIREMENTS (a commitment to this position entails):
* Teaching approximately 6 hours a week for five weeks (from July 1 to
August 4, 2001)
* Attending faculty meetings and special events between May and
August, 2001
* Evaluating students and student work at the end of the program
