To continue this debate I have been researching welfare-to-work programmes
in the UK and USA for my PhD and working with community activists in the US
who are desperate for independent research by academics that examines the
consequences of workfare programmes on individual welfare recipients.
I think this a really valuable debate for Geographers to be having in a
research area previously dominated by Government sponsored analysis of
programmes, and hope if Geographers feel uncomfortable about who is
conducting current research that more start to work on this themselves!
