The Student Experience of Independent Study
Professor John Stephenson, Middlesex University
An open seminar from 3.30 to 5 p.m.on Thursday 25 January 2001 at
The Lecture Room. Faculty of Continuing Education, Birkbeck
College, 26 Russell Square, London WC1.
This is the third seminar in a series of six on "How do lifelong learners
learn?". Professor John Stephenson will address the issues of how
students may be enabled to become independent learners in Higher
Education and, conversely, how Higher Education might contribute to
the agenda of autonomous lifelong learning. John was Head of the
School for Independent Study at North East London Polytechnic
(now UEL), where he researched the student experience of
independent study for his PhD. He later led the RSA's "Capability in
Higher Education" initiative and, while based at Leeds University,
established a BA/BSc by Work Based Learning. He is currently
Professor of Lifelong Learning at Middlesex University. His most
recent publication, with Professor Mantz York, is Capability and
Quality in Higher Education (Kogan Page, 1998).
The seminar series is organised jointly by Birkbeck College, the
University of East London and SCUTREA (the Standing Conference
for Teaching and Research in the Education of Adults).
