PRELIMINARY ANNOUNCEMENT OF FOUR POSITIONS IN LATE QUATERNARY PALAEOENVIRONMENTS
AT EXETER
1. Lectureship (scale A). Late Quaternary Palaeoenvironments
Candidates for this permanent post should have a developing research profile in the field
of Late Quaternary palaeoenvironments. Applications will be particularly welcome from those
with expertise in palaeolimnology, or perimarine or wetland environments. He/she will be
expected to contribute to undergraduate programmes and to postgraduate research training
in Geography.
Starting date: Oct. 2001
Likely interview dates: feb. 2001
For further details contact the Dept. of Geography. For informal discussion contact
Prof. A. G. Brown (see below)
The following posts arise from the award of a NERC grant to Brown (PI), Dinnin and Walling
2. Post Doctoral Research Fellow (3 yrs): Palaeoentomological (coleoptera) studies of
palaeochannel deposits.
The project involves sampling and analysis of Holocene fossil beetle assemblages from floodplain
deposits. Ideally, the applicant should have a background in Holocene palaeoecology and relevant
experience in palaeoentomology. Although practical expertise in fossil beetle (Coleoptera)
analysis is desirable, applications are welcome from those with experience in contemporary
entomology or other fossil other invertebrate groups.
For details or discussion contact Dr M. Dinnin, Geography Exeter
[log in to unmask] tel. 01392 263359)
The post is available from April 2001
3. Post Doctoral Research Fellow (2 yrs): Late Holocene and recent floodplain sedimentation rates of the river Culm, Devon.
The work undertaken by the successful applicant will involve the employment of the 137Cs and
210Pb techniques for the dating of Late Holocene and recent sediments on the floodplain of the
river Culm. The work will link with other dating studies (14C, AMS, OSL) and palaeoecological
research. The research fellow will part of a large research group at Exeter studying hydrology
and fluvial sediments and will be trained in the use of radionuclides in geomorphology. The post
would suit a postdoctoral researcher with graduate experience in geomorphology, hydrology or
Environmental Science.
For details or discussion contact Prof. D. E. Walling ([log in to unmask] tel 01392 263345)
The post is available from April. 2001
4. Postgraduate Studentship (3 yrs): Palaeoecology of the river Culm floodplain, Devon.
The student will undertake stratigraphic studies, sampling, macrofossil analysis and pollen
analyses of palaeochannel deposits from the floodplain of the river Culm, Devon. A pilot study
has revealed 45 km of palaeochannels much containing organic sediments. The student will be
trained in the appropriate techniques and will join an active research group studying Late
Quaternary palaeoenvironmental change.
Studentship available from April 2001 onwards (up until October 2001)
For further details/discussion contact Prof. A. G. Brown
The posts will all be advertised early in the new year but enquiries are welcome now
