Not sure how our A&E Depts. have been doing but at the Essex Ambulance
Service we have seen up to a 40% increase in work for the last few days,
hour by hour but nowhere near last years figures . The 24 hour figures
(against our usual 420 per day) were 670 for 30th, 482 for 31st and 250 for
first eight hours of 1st Jan. Last year we topped 1,000 calls on one of the
days and around 900 on the others. NHSDirect for Essex has seen an
approximate 20% increase in calls over the entire holiday period but had
sufficient nurses and call takers to cope. Our bureau that takes GP calls,
triages them then sends them out to GPs has had 600 calls by now, when the
usual number is around 300, so the GPs seem to be taking the brunt of the
pressure.
