TIA has multiple causes and each requires differing
managment
In South Africa we do as follows:
1) all patients not on warfarin get low dose Aspirin
2) Cardiac Echo for patients with Cardiac murmur or AF
3) Dupplex Doppler for any patient with Carotid bruit
and followed by A-gram if significant lesion
4) Hypercoag screening tests if risk factors (+) and
other tests neg.
5) Stabilise co-morbidity and prepare for Surgery if
Carotid endarterectomy seems indicated according to
NASCET or ACAS criteria and cardiac cause excluded
These done with-in 1 month of presentation often as
inpatient
