There's been a fair amount of GP-bashing on this list before, sometimes
even justified, but I am moved to praise our local GP co-operative for
dealing admirably with the usual massive rise in primary care demand
over the hols. I'm quite prepared to accept that we are blessed with
good GPs round here, but well done all the same. We were stretched way
beyond normal demand on the icy days and I don't know what we'd have
done if we'd had a load of "minor" ailments and illnesses to reassure
people about as well as deal with the flood of significant conditions.
We were not the only ones working very hard on holidays.
The other noteworthy thing was just how darned decent patients were:
despite waits in excess of 5 hours for well-deserving but non-life/limb-
threatening conditions, barely a word of complaint, and plenty of thank-
yous and seasons greetings etc. Almost embarrassing when the poor
punter's just had to spend all day in our waiting room. Still, at least
they don't have to spend (nearly) every Xmas / New Year in A&E like I
do.
