My current unit is only a 3 Specialist unit ( soon to be 4 ), with a 3 year plan to expand to 7.
Consultant floor coverage is 8-8 currently, registrar on floor 24/7
About 40,000 patient visits a year.
This is relatively low consultant numbers by Australasian standards, most similar sized units have about 7 - 8 consultants. With the bigger units having progressively more. There are currently multiple units waiting to expand, but cannot get the consultants, but there is a bulge in the current registrar training group which should satisfy a lot of those units
The guidelines for staffing based loosely on triage time performance indicators. The number of staff you require, being indicated by your ability to meet performance targets.
Triage 1 Seen within 0 minutes - 98 % adherence to standard
2 Seen within 10 minutes - 95 % " "
3 30 min - 90% " "
4 60 min - 90% " "
5 120 min - 85% " "
With consultants having a maximum of 70 % clinical and registrars having a maximum of 85% clinical.
