I think it's a pretty old word - I'm pretty sure people like Hockett and
Gleason (ever heard of them? Big Boys in the pre-Chomskyan world) talked
about constructions in the 1950s and 1960s; maybe Bloomfield did too
(didn't he contrast endocentric and exocentric constructions?) in 1930;
maybe Jespersen before him; maybe Sweet; maybe it's part of trad grammar.
