The Sowerby Centre for Health Informatics at Newcastle (SCHIN) is an
internationally renowned academic unit specialising in the developing field
of information science as it relates to the healthcare process. SCHIN
engages in a mix of academic activity and a series of high profile
research, development and implementation projects. In addition, SCHIN plays
an influential role on both the national and international stages. Due to a
period of expansion, SCHIN is currently looking to supplement it’s IT and
National Dissemination Teams.
All of the posts are based within the IT Team provide excellent training
and personal development opportunities, and candidates will be supported in
enhancing and expanding their skill sets. Microsoft and Sun accreditation
will be encouraged where appropriate.
All posts are tenable for 12 months in the first instance. Interviews will
be held on Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th March 2001. The closing date for
all applications is 1st March 2001.
*** Senior Web Developer - £16,775 - £25,213/£23,256 - £30,967 ***
You will be predominantly responsible for the design and development of a
national, web-based system to facilitate on-line appraisal of Doctors. You
will have strong web development, programming and database design skills
and will have used languages such as Java, Visual Basic, VB Script, Visual
C++, or Perl. In addition to this, an eye for user interface design and
skills in packages such as Photoshop and/or Flash would be a bonus. A
working knowledge of the XML family of technologies would be advantageous.
The role requires a computing professional with a minimum of 2 years
experience in the design and development of web-based interactive systems.
You will have an active interest in the design and implementation of
web-based technologies.
The role will involve liaison and meetings with project partners and as
such, excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential,
combined with an interest in project management. There will be
opportunities to become involved in staff supervision and as such, a
professional and structured approach to working practices would be an
advantage. A degree, higher degree, or equivalent in a computing-related
discipline is desirable.
*** Network Administrator - £16,775 - £25,213/£23,256 - £30,967 ***
You will take responsibility for the daily administration and continuing
development of the NT4 network. Supporting a developing LAN of about sixty
users the Centre is currently migrating to Windows 2000, and plans to
incorporate BackOffice 2000 (particularly Exchange) at the earliest
opportunity. You will have a minimum of two years experience administrating
an NT4 network including server installations; knowledge of Exchange,
Windows 2000 and TCP/IP would certainly be advantageous. Experience of SQL
Server or Web Management (IIS5) would be beneficial but is not essential.
The role will suit a strong team player with the ability, motivation and
initiative to develop the network in a creative environment. A varied
interest in IT, strong user orientation and awareness of new developments
will be excellent attributes for potential candidates. A degree in a
computing-related discipline is desirable.
*** Software Developer - £16,775 - £25,213/£23,256 - £30,967 ***
You will work on the development of knowledge authoring tools and knowledge
delivery tools, based partly on pre-existing software already developed by
SCHIN and research partners of SCHIN, and partly based on novel ideas
arising as work progresses. You will be expected to contribute innovative
ideas and to research and evaluate ideas suggested by other team members.
In addition, you will be required to design, implement and test prototype
tools, and document interim and final designs whilst providing support to
other members of the department.
You will have a strong skill base, with a minimum of 12 months experience
in software development using languages such as Java, Visual Basic, Visual
C++, or Perl and some experience of object oriented design. Relational
database management skills are essential and experience of SQL Server would
be advantageous. An interest in XML technologies would also be desirable.
Personal skills and qualities will include problem solving, planning and
organisation, delivering results and effective team working. A degree,
higher degree, or equivalent in a computing-related discipline is desirable.
