I have no idea of any research, but I do know that someone was recently
prosecuted for passing off (amongst other things) in the US and one of the
things he did was to buy urls with names very close to famous or well-used
ones in the hope that people who got it wrong or who were guessing would
reach his website instead - and they did - in their thousands.
If this kind of thing didn't go on, then cybersquatting wouldn't be
profitable... however I have no more figures for you unfortunately!
