I agree with you that people use search - there is evidence for this on some
of the web sites about search services which, IIRC, indicates that this
route is used about 80% of the time.
The only thing I would point out is that the actual URL has a noticeable
effect on page ranking in some search service output so it will affect
whether the page is found.
