Ian, Sheila
Your web-servers should be able to re-direct requests between web pages, saving the users themselves from having to navigate. For instance, looking at the documentation for the Apache/NCSA server, the ServerAlias directive specifies an alternative name for your server and the Alias directive re-directs requests for web-pages etc to another set of files/directories. You could perhaps use the latter to re-direct requests for material on the old site straight to the new site, assuming there is a reasonable mapping between them. There are many other directives and probably some other useful techniques; you'll want to talk to your web-master for clarification.
(I have 'Webmaster in a nutshell', ISBN 1-56592-229-8 (1st edition) - it's now at the 2nd edition - and it is a good reference guide to the facilities used in the whole web process, including the major web-servers.)
Good luck.
